Polygamists and Music, That’s what Hildale, Utah has in common May 5, 2018

Polygamists and Music, That’s what Hildale, Utah has in common May 5, 2018

Polygamy. Polygamy and Utah go together right? Well not really, but kinda….
How about Polygamy and music? Well not really, but kinda….

May 5th, 2018 the Colorado Music Festival is coming to the stronghold of former FLDS leader Warren Jeffs. (Yes, That Warren Jeffs, still serving a life sentence as a convicted felon / child molester) Maxwell Park, Hildale Ut., One of the loveliest places you will ever hang out for an afternoon. Nothing beats red cliffs, blue skies and green grass.

The twin towns of Hildale Utah and Colorado City Arizona, sit on the border of UT. and AZ on what is called “The Arizona Strip”. About 40 min. South West of Kanab, Utah. It’s hard to tell where one town stops and the other starts. The majority of the residents in the pair of border cities are members of the insular FLDS Church. But the first weekend in May the city park in Hildale will ring with soul, blues and country music. Everyone is invited.

This is the second year for the budding music festival. John and I will be there. Do you want us to save you a spot for your lawn chair?

Note from Tom Bennett, organizer – “This festival is very unique for a number of reasons, the most obvious being that Colorado City is known historically as a polygamist town. Music and culture have been stifled as the community became more conservative over the years, however those times are changing! The Hildale side of the town now has their first woman Mayor and a brewery is going in on the Arizona side! There are many other amazing changes going on as well. Also, this festival is held on the back cliffs of Zion National Park, the field we have the festival on was featured on the cover of National Geographic!”  Last year’s event was mentioned by USA Today.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Kanab, Utah

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Kanab, Utah

OK, I’m gonna be blunt – Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is special. Period, and I don’t even own a pet.

It’s a Big Deal

I had heard of Best Friends years ago, but until we came to Kanab for good, I did not realize the scope of what goes on here. They are a big deal. Aside for what they do for the thousand of animals that go thru their doors, Best Friends is the largest employer in our county.

Small beginnings to a large National network

The sanctuary began in 1984 and from here, the work to save the lives of homeless pets spread across the country and has continued to expand. Currently, Best Friends operates pet adoption centers, spay/neuter clinics and no-kill initiatives in Los Angeles, New York City, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, as well as a Best Friends Network of animal rescue groups in every corner of the nation.

Volunteers, That’s you!

Many of our Guests that come to stay at The Western Star Bungalow or The Star Garage are coming because of Best Friends. As a pet friendly property we always welcoming to Best Friend sleep-overs! (When you volunteer, you can bring home a sleep-over pet if you want. How fun is that!?)

You have to see it to believe it! On any given day, about 1,700 animals are turning their lives around, receiving the medical help they need, and getting love and acceptance to help them overcome their past. While searching for their forever homes, they live in a scenic, healing environment among human and animal friends.
Best Friends owns nearly 3,700 acres, and lease another 17,000 acres of state and federal land. Nearly 30,000 people visit every year to meet the animals and tour what has become the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals.

Get The Tour

Take a free tour or explore one of the many walking paths or hiking trails. Book ahead if at possible. They regularly fill up. I think the large pet Cemetary is especially touching. Volunteers are always needed, and the experience is always a magical one.

Go to http://bestfriends.org/visit for more information and tour sign ups. Their work and their website are extensive.

The animals and the canyon are waiting!
