Ending the Thanksgiving weekend we have the Christmas Light Parade and Festival. This is the best kickoff to the holiday season you will find anywhere in Southern Utah! Starting at 7 pm in Kanab join us on Center Street where we will shut down the highway and begin our unique Christmas Light Parade. Anyone can enter a float in the parade. If you wish to enter the parade show up at the Kane County Visitor Center at 6 pm to sign up. This year’s theme will be the “I’ll be Home for Christmas”. Bring the whole family as you watch the beautifully crafted parade entries float down Center Street, then turn around, just to be seen a second time.
After the parade, join us on Main Street for hot chocolate and donuts provided by the Volunteer Center and Kanab Chamber of Commerce, and lastly, a magical paper lantern wishing launch. Purchase your wishing lanterns ahead of time, or at the event; write messages or wishes on your paper lanterns and send them to the sky. Watch your lanterns float to the heavens with a message to a loved one, or to the cosmos with your wishes attached. You may purchase your lanterns ahead of time here.
All paper lanterns are 100% biodegradable and there is a local bounty on all lanterns found throughout the town and the surrounding area to encourage a quick clean up. If you find lanterns and wish to turn them in for a $1 bounty, you can take them to the Events and Volunteer Center (at the airport). These lantern sales are a fundraiser for our local Sub 4 Santa program to help families in need at Christmas time to ensure their children have gifts under the tree. Most gifts are items children are in need of, if you wish to donate to Sub 4 Santa you can contact the Volunteer Center at 435-644-3696.
Decorate your home for Prizes!
Local homes can enter the light decorating contest by contacting the Volunteer Center 435-644- 3696
The public can vote on their favorites between Nov. 23 Dec. 19th on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/VolunteerCenterOfKaneCounty/

Welcome to Saturday evenings in Kanab. This literally was how we spent last Saturday, and hope to spend the rest of the Saturday evenings this summer.Kanab’s Outdoor Farmers Market has taken on several forms over the last few years but I think this new move to the park is a winner! With live music every Market night, the park is a magical place to be.Even though we are early in the growing season, there were unique and interesting booths to discover. We had a great visit with Kato who has worked at the Glen Canyon Dam for 20 years. As he looks forward to retirement he is building his own Hot Sauce Brand. One made from Prickly Pear cactus!Carol, the curator of the Maynard Dixon Museum has produced a beautiful photo book of Native Americans taken by the John Wesley Powell expedition in the 1870’s.Paul and Liz are on an organic journey to bring all the natural goodness mother earth has to offer, as they distill their own essential oil for soaps and hydrosols. All from local desert plants like Pinion Pine, Chaparral, Juniper berry, and Sagebrush.Marty does amazing photography of the local landscape. The Wave and White Pockets never looked so good.
Pam’s Jellies and Jams also makes homemade treats that cater to Keto and gluten-free.
Even though the market is the main event, We enjoyed just sitting down to enjoy the music and watch the kids play! The vendors will come and go, change and rotate throughout the season, but I’m sure there will always be something at Kanabs Outdoor Market to tickle your fancy, and your taste buds!
5-8pm – Jacob Hamblin Park, Kanab Utah
You can follow the Markets Facebook page here:
Listen bright and early at 6:00 AM for the cannons as they Blast Off! awakening the whole town for the days festivities! Soon after, join in on a Color Fun Run 5K starting at the church in the center of town at 7:00AM.

After the parade find yourself at Jacob Hamblin Park for vendors, entertainment and many more festivities throughout the day and into the evening.
Once the sun sets at 9:30 prepare yourself for one of the most unique firework shows you have ever seen! Fireworks shoot off overhead at Jacob Hamblin park, illuminating the red cliffs while sending echoes all throughout the town!
Celebrate Independence day in small town USA !

Quick-turnaround film competition. Starts at High noon April 4th
The unmistakable scenery of the Kanab area has made this part of southern Utah a favorite destination for filmmakers since the 1930’s. Building on this filmmaking history, the annual “Little Hollywood Shootout,” is taking place at the historic Parry Lodge in Kanab, Utah starting on April 4, 2018. The “shootout” is a quick-turnaround film competition offering filmmakers the challenge of producing a short film with Kanab locations as the backdrop.
A fun video from last year – wrong dates for this year though –
Teams will have 49.5 hours to write, direct, edit, and complete a short five-minute film. Film submissions are due at 1:30 pm on Friday, April 6, 2018 either in person or online. The shootout films will then be premiered at a community screening and awards ceremony in the evening on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Crescent Moon Theater in Kanab.
Prospective filmmakers of all ages from beginners to veterans are invited to take part in the challenge. Primary filming locations are required to take place in Kane County but editing and post-production can take place at the participants desired location. Two divisions are available for participants with one category intended for novice filmmakers of all ages looking to gain experience and the other division is designed for competitors who have experience in film production.
Community members and participants are strongly encouraged and invited to attend the screening and awards ceremony. For more information about the Little Hollywood Shootout or to register your team, visit www.littlehollywoodshootout.org or call 435-899-0443.
